GRAHAM, Wash. -- Police have yet to indicate whether they will become involved in the case of a goat who was used as target practice in Graham last week.
But there is a $5,000 reward being offered to anyone with information leading to the arrest of the person responsible. The Sultan-Based animal rescue group, Pasado’s Safe Haven, said it will not simply wait for authorities to act on what they call the “horrible, gruesome death” of “this poor beautiful creature.”
Pasado’s received a call after a man looking for his lost dog discovered the body of the goat. It lay already dead near a rope tied to a tree.
The goat, which may have been someone’s pet, was found “with many arrow wounds,” according to an account written by Pasado’s worker Amber Chenoweth.
According to Chenoweth, local law enforcement and animal control originally refused to help with the goat because removing dead animals is not within their duties.
Numerous people living in the neighborhood near where the goat was found between 224th Street East and 58th Avenue East have come forward with statements and information.
Chenoweth wrote that Pasado’s is now working with the Pierce County Sherriff's Department and expects and update from their investigation soon. It is unknown if police currently have any suspects.
In the meantime, Chenoweth urges anyone with information about the goat slaying to come forward.
She notes that despite the torture the goat must have endured at the hand of a “coward,” some people in the community have shown the goat love.
“A person from the neighborhood quietly tucked a little pink rose into a fold in the tarp where the goat lay,” she wrote. “My eyes filled with tears. This kind, beautiful act happened when no one was looking. It was something that had been given to the goat from the heart - purely out of love.”
